Carl Breeze took his first win of the 2010 Ginetta G50 Cup during the weekend's second race at Rockingham.
Total Control Racing's Breeze, who lined up on the front row alongside race one victor Frank Wrathall for the mornings damp race took the lead off the line and was never challenged as he took his first victory since Snetterton in 2009.
At the start, Breeze made a better start and slotted into the lead ahead of Dynojet duo Wrathall and Adam Morgan, with fellow race one charger Tom Sharp slotting into fourth.
The leading pair started to pull away from Morgan and the chasing pack, and lap two saw Mark Davies, Benji Hetherington and Joachim Ritter join in the battle for third. Turn Three, Yentwood, saw third place change as Davies found his way past Morgan, which he soon lost.
The Safety Car was deployed for the first time on lap three as Chris Dittman was in a dangerous position at Yentwood. Three laps later the green flag was back out and Breeze led the chasing pack back into race action.
No sooner had the Safety Car been withdrawn, it was deployed again as Hetherington was stuck in the gravel at Pif-Paf; Ritter up into sixth with the demise of the Century Motorsport car.
Lap nine saw the second re-start and as per the first re-start, Breeze held off the attention of Wrathall, and behind the top two the third place battle was becoming fierce and Davies and Morgan swapped positions. The battle for fifth was also getting interesting as Sharp and Ritter started to trade places.
All of this was happening just as a light sprinkling of race was falling.
Lap eleven saw Ritter move into a podium position as he took two places at once at Tarzan. Taking the inside line, the Switzerland based Danish driver passed both Morgan and Davies as they battled on the outside line.
All of the hard work put in by Ritter to get into third was thrown away the following lap as he spun down the field at the first hairpin at Deene. This promoted Davies into third, and soon the Optimum Motorsport racer was dropping back – a spin at Tarzan relegated the reigning G20 Champion to seventeenth and last.
All of this action gave Morgan his first podium finish of the season ahead of the sister Dynojet car of Kieran Vernon – Vernon having started eighteenth on the grid – this meant that the Dynojet cars finished second, third and fourth.
Behind the Dynojet train was Julien Draper and Tom Sharp – Draper would start race three from pole position after the top five were reversed. Taking his fifth consecutive Chairman's Cup victory was the CWS car of Colin White, who finished tenth overall.
After taking his first win of the season, a delighted Breeze said: “The start was great, I managed to pull out a gap for the first couple of laps and then the Safety Car enabled me to cool the tyres down. After the second Safety Car, the track dried more so it became trickier on the wets but it all worked out well for us in the end. It's great to bring the Bluechip car back on to the top step of the podium with a win.”
For third place Morgan, it signalled his first visit to the podium in 2010: “I made it hard for myself but managed to come out of it with a podium so I'm very happy. I have a great team in Dynojet behind me and they gave me a great car this weekend so this result is thanks to them.”
