Giedo van der Garde set the fastest time in GP2 free practice at Monza. The Dutchman beat Addax teammate Sergio Perez to the top spot, with local driver Luca Filippi third.
Van der Garde led for most of the session, setting his fastest time just 12 minutes into the session. Series leader Pastor Maldonado endured a messy session, cutting the second chicane on a number of occasions. The Venezuelan Rapax driver was down in 21st position towards the end of the session, but managed to haul himself up to seventh. Sam Bird was fourth for ART, ahead of Dani Clos of Racing Engineering and Romain Grosjean of DAMS.
Arden driver Charles Pic brought his session to an early finish after crashing at the Parabolica before he had set a competitive time. Newcomer Brendon Hartley finished 23rd for Coloni, just behind another debutant, Edoardo Piscopo. The Italian Trident Racing driver finished 22nd, having collided with DPR's Michael Herck earlier in the session.
