Bottas Claims Pole In Hungary In ART Front Row Lockout

1 Mins read

Valtteri Bottas scored his first pole position in the GP3 Series in qualifying at the Hungaroring. The Finn was 0.330 seconds quicker than teammate James Calado as ART locked out the front row of the grid.

The duo began the session amongst the favourites for pole position having each topped a practice session on Friday.

Bottas, who finally scored his first win in the series last weekend at the Nurburgring, moved half a second ahead of the field with less than ten minutes of the session completed. His laptime remained good enough until the closing stages when Calado moved close to him. Bottas soon responded and improved his time to secure the pole position.

Mitch Evans claimed third place after the checkered flag dropped, knocking fellow 17-year-old Aaro Vainio down to fourth. Michael Christensen was fifth, ahead of Rio Haryanto and Nico Muller. Tom Dillmann was eighth, with Adrian Quaife-Hobbs ninth. Pedro Nunes placed the third of the ART cars just inside the top ten.

Championship leader Alexander Sims qualified in 11th place having been off the pace for the entire weekend so far. Title rivals Nigel Melker and Lewis Williamson also struggled, taking 14th and 15th on the grid.
