Mihai Marinescu scored his maiden FIA Formula Two pole position in qualifying at Monza. The Romanian, who had been second quickest in both free practice sessions on Friday, went 0.168 seconds quicker than second-placed Alex Brundle.
“I’m very happy about it and I’m very pleased that it’s happened right here at Monza which is a very special place for me,” said Marinescu. “I grew up here, everything as a race driver started for me here and it’s like a home. There were a lot of quick laps where I was fastest but also the new tyres made a big difference compared to yesterday’s free practice.”
Third was Ramon Pineiro, who has won three successive races. Championship leader Mirko Bortolotti had topped both practice sessions but could only manage fourth in qualifying, 0.005s ahead of nearest rival Christopher Zanella.
Tobias Hegewald was sixth ahead of Mikkel Mac and Thiemo Storz, with Jack Clarke and Benjamin Lariche rounding out the top ten.
