2011 Formula 3 Euro Series champion Roberto Merhi scored his tenth win of the season in the first race of the final weekend at Hockenheim, after keeping Masters of F3 winner Felix Rosenqvist at bay under intense pressure.
While Merhi kept hold of the lead from pole at the start, Rosenqvist actually lost second place to Laurens Vanthoor off the line. The Swede managed to regain the place though later on the opening lap.
Rosenqvist remained on Merhi's tail for the rest of the race but couldn't get past to score his first Euro Series victory. Merhi's win gave his Prema Powerteam the teams' title.
“My start was one of the best of the year,” said Merhi. “After that, I was able to pull a slight gap until my front tyres started to wear out, which allowed Felix to close up. However, it was enough for victory.”
Rosenqvist was again gutted to have to play second fiddle. “This was already my sixth second place this year,” he said. “Slowly, it is getting a little bit frustrating. At the start, I had a problem with the handbrake and lost one place.”
Marco Wittmann finished behind Signature teammate Vanthoor in fourth, moving him closer to taking the runner-up spot overall. His nearest rival for the place, Daniel Juncadella, could only finish seventh, giving Wittmann a six point lead with two races remaining. Daniel Abt and Nigel Melker finished fifth and sixth.
