The 2012 Avon Tyres British GT Championship will feature the same mix of race weekend formats as the super competitive 2011 campaign.
Oulton Park once again hosts the opening weekend of the championship on Easter Weekend, the series starting with a pair of 60 minute races as the Cheshire track. The same format will be used for the second weekend of the calendar, where the British championship travels to the Nurburgring.
The races on the GP layout of the famous venue are, in many respects, the highlight of the 2012 calendar with the races taking place in support of the Nurburgring 24 Hours, with 150,000 fans expected at the track for the weekend (17-19 May).
Back on British soil Rockingham will host the season's first two hour race. For the first time the championship will run on the International Long Circuit – 2.56 miles compared to the 1.94 layout previously used.
After the year’s third and final 'double-header' at Snetterton the series again climaxes with a pair of endurance races, though for 2012 Silverstone will be the penultimate round with a three hour race around the British Grand Prix venue, three weeks before the season finale – a two hour race at Donington Park.
“We're confident that the 2012 championship will be the best yet,” said championship manager Benjamin Franassovici. “2011 was a great year for us and we built a solid foundation for this season. We've decided not to meddle with a formula that is proven to work, instead we're adding to the series on and off track and adding clarity to the regulations to improve understanding.”
The continuity represented in the mix of formats comes after a thrilling 2011 season, featuring seven different winners, that was not decided until the final weekend of competition.
Several teams have already pledged to return to the championship for 2012, with several new teams and cars, including a GT3 Chevron, BMW Z4 and brand new Aston Martin Vantage GT3, expected as well.
“Judging by the unprecedented levels of interest we have already had for January we are on track for another exciting British GT season,” said an enthusiastic Franassovici. “We are working on adding some new cars to join us this season and I can’t wait for race one at Oulton Park.”
