Fabio Leimer will race for Racing Engineering in the GP2 Series this season, it has finally been confirmed. The deal comes after the Swiss driver's race-winning performance with the Spanish squad at the non-championship round at Abu Dhabi last November.

Following two seasons in the Formula 1 feeder series with the Ocean and Rapax teams, the 22-year-old switched to Racing Engineering for post-season testing late last year, and was regularly at the top of the timesheets. He carried that form on to the GP2 Final at Yas Marina, taking pole position and with it his first feature race win.

“I am extremely happy I could sign an agreement with the Spanish Racing Engineering team and to participate with them in the 2012 GP2 Series,” said Leimer, who also made his F1 testing debut with Sauber at Abu Dhabi last November.

“I felt already very comfortable with the team during the first tests. During these tests in Jerez and Barcelona, but also the races in Abu Dhabi we were very competitive, and if we work like this during the 2012 season, then I am convinced we will be quite high up in the final standings of the championship. I am really looking forward to working with Racing Engineering and am thankful to the team for believing in me and that they will always provide me with the best possible car.”

Alfonso de Orléans-Borbón, president of Racing Engineering, said: “I am very happy that Fabio joins the team for the 2012 season. He is a driver with tremendous talent and tenacity. He never gives up and has shown so during the post season tests as well as the race meeting in Abu Dhabi, which he dominated in the Racing Engineering car.

“Our aim as a team is to make sure he wins the championship and we are putting all our tools at his disposal. After the great work we did together this winter, all we have to do is fine tune everything at the next tests in Jerez and Barcelona so the competition for the 2012 Champion begins.”
