The Williams Garage Was Gutted By A Huge Fire After The Spanish Grand Prix

One member of the Williams F1 team remains in hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the fire the team's pit garage following the Spanish Grand Prix yesterday (May 13).

In an official statement the team confirmed that the man had has suffered burns, but was in a stable condition in hospital and is expected to be returned to the UK within the next 48 hours, where he will continue to receive medical treatment.

Two other team members who were hospitalised with smoke inhalation have already returned home after receiving treatment.

“I was pleased to welcome back to the factory the majority of our team this morning,” said Sir Frank Williams. “One of our people remains in Spain for further medical assistance, but we are all looking forward to his imminent return.”

“Everyone at Williams F1 is extremely relieved that this event was contained as quickly as it was and the damage which occurred was, relatively speaking, limited in its nature. While the incident was unexpected and definitely most undesirable, it has demonstrated the genuine cohesiveness, camaraderie and spirit of co-operation that exists within the Formula One paddock. The astonishing response from the teams and other paddock personnel was immediate, unconditional and overwhelming.”

Investigations into the cause of the fire are still on going.
