Paul Rivett has closed the gap to Jack Goff at the top of the 2012 AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK standings to just 15 points after securing his fourth consecutive win with victory in Round Twelve at Rockingham.
The race started under the safety car as rain continued to fall heavily over Northamptonshire, with the racing getting underway on lap three. The safety car’s presence meant that Goff had an easier run into the first corner than he would have, with the field looking pretty spread out.
While most of the drivers adapted to the tricky conditions well, one driver to make a mistake was Mike Bushell, a spin at Gracelands ending with him getting beached in the gravel, bringing out the safety car.
Sitting in second behind the safety car, Rivett went straight on the offensive at the restart, pressuring Goff for a couple of laps before making a move on lap nine, sliding past into Deene to take the lead.
Another driver making progress was Stefan Hodgetts, the KX Akademy member having worked his way up from twelfth on the grid to eighth before the safety car. At the restart he continued his forward drive, passing Josh Files for seventh on lap seven, however he went on to lose the place back two laps later, with Files going on to overtake James Colburn for fifth.
At the front, Rivett was pulling away by nearly a second a lap as he went on to take his sixth win of the season by 5.8s, with Goff a comfortable second and James Dixon completing the podium.
Securing the Rookie Class win in fourth was Josh Cook, the 20Ten Racing driver just holding off Files on the line, however their battle turned sour after the finish when contact between the two sent Files off into the wall, causing substantial damage to his Pyro-run Clio.
Colburn took sixth ahead of Adam Bonham, with Hodgetts dropping to eighth take on. Jake Giddings and Ignas Gelzinis completed the top ten, while securing the Masters Class honours in eleventh overall was Simon Belcher.
