4 – Oulton Park, race three – Jordan through the madness

Every season of BTCC contains one race in which all sanity is broken down. Oulton Park’s reverse-grid encounter was that very race of 2013…

Jeff Smith started on pole for Pirtek Racing, but became embroiled in an early-race dogfight with Rob Austin, the Audi and Honda rubbing panels through Cascades on lap two as Austin defended grimly following a demon start.

With both hunting for potentially a maiden BTCC win, it took until lap seven for Austin to surrender his lead, but only through an aggressive elbow job by Smith at the final corner. Another Independent, Adam Morgan – having a superb season for Ciceley Racing – then took the fight to Smith for what would have also been his first win, but they soon had a charging Andrew Jordan to contend with.

The usual suspects had a rough start to the race, Gordon Shedden suffering a puncture after a tap with team-mate Matt Neal, although that was nothing compared to Jason Plato‘s exit, the man who won the opening pair of races suffering a flash fire under the bonnet of his MG6.

Jordan carved his way through to second place ahead of Colin Turkington and Morgan, leaving Eurotech on course for a spectacular 1-2 finish.

Although Jordan showed his nose several times, the pair gave each other enough room as they fought for the win, until Smith threw away the lead spectacularly with three laps to go as he got into a huge tankslapper at Knickerbrook.

Jordan inherited the lead and the win, while Smith retired after a more spectacular spin at Cascades, Morgan joining Jordan and Turkington on the podium for the first time in his still-young BTCC career.
