Tony Gilham has announced a return to the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup for the final two races of the 2013 season at Donington Park this weekend, racing under his own Team HARD banner.
The Team HARD boss last raced in the VW Cup back in July 2012 when he also last tasted success in the series at Spa-Francorchamps on that occassion, and will now make a one-off appearance in this weekend’s curtain-closing double-header at Donington Park.
Gilham bolsters his own squad’s line-up after regular driver David Sutton announced a switch to drive a Golf GTI for the AWM/Warranty Direct team for Donington, 2007 champion Gilham joining Tom Barley, Kieran Gallagher, Graham Perkins and Darelle Wilson on the grid for HARD in a Golf GTI.
Gilham had hinted a one-off return to the Volkswagen Cup grid earlier this season but that deal was eventually canned, focusing on developing drivers while commanding his squad in both VW Cup and BTCC.
While Gilham has not raced in BTCC since a brief outing with Thorney Motorsport in a Vauxhall Insignia last year, he did not count out the possibilty of a return to the wheel of a BTCC car in the near future.
The APR Volkswagen Racing Cup’s final two races get underway on Sunday (October 6) at Donington Park, the pair of British GT-supporting encounters also receiving live coverage on Motors TV (Sky channel 447).
