The Asian Le Mans Series (AsLMS) reaches a stunning climax this weekend as the four round championship hits Sepang on 8 December.
In the top LMP2 class, there is a tight battle to see who will take the first prototype title from this revived AsLMS season. Currently KCMG lead the standings with 68 points but that only gives them a lead of four points over the chasing OAK Racing Team Total entry.
With only two machines in the class and 25 points going for a win and 18 for second place – with a single point going for the top qualifier – the equation boils down to this: the team that scores the win, scores the championship.
In the prototype drivers championship the story is much the same, KCMG’s James Winslow has to finish better than OAK’s David Cheng and the Brit will win the driver’s championship.
Into the most populated AsLMS category GTC, the uncatchable leaders are AF Corse who only have to start the race in order to be crowned champions. That means the battle to watch is for the runner up spot and the second invitation to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, currently Craft Racing have the advantage with their Aston Martin Vantage sitting only two points ahead of AAI-RSTRADA’s BMW Z4 GT3. A strong battle will be fought around the Malaysian track to see if AAI can pull back the two point gap and score a Le Mans invite.
The same scenario has unfolded in GTE, with only one full season entry – Taisan Ken Endless – they are assured the championship crown as long as they start. However, their 100% record could be under fire should AAIs GTE entry score a victory.
Outside the championship struggle, the full season entrants will be joined by a number of one off entries. These include the Murphy Prototype’s ORECA 03 Nissan which will be raced by Craft Racing in LMP2, as well as GTC entries for Gamma Racing, Mike Racing and Zen low who are all entering GT3 Lamborghini Gallardos.
