MotoGP 2013: Valencia Grand Prix – Power Five

5 Mins read

2. Jorge Lorenzo (MotoGP)

The championship may have gone elsewhere but Valencia played host to another masterclass for Jorge Lorenzo to add to his ever-growing collection. Much like at Motegi, this was a Grand Prix that on paper at least, Lorenzo had no right to win but the brilliance of the Yamaha rider made the difference.

Heading into the weekend, Jorge knew that victory was the only option in order for him to retain his title but a sensational lap from Marc Marquez denied him pole position and winning the race looked challenging enough, let alone the championship. Aggression was the key to Jorge’s race with the Spaniard quick to react whenever Dani Pedrosa edged ahead of him, including a move which effectively ran them both off the road.

Mindful that Marquez had to be outside the top four to swing the championship his way, Jorge reached even deeper into his bag of tricks, slowing the pace at the front in an effort to land Marc in trouble. Despite his best efforts to go slowly though, the pack still couldn’t keep up and in any case, satellite Honda rider Alvaro Bautista wasn’t particularly motivated to deny his employers a world title.

Once the race settled down, Lorenzo was head and shoulders above the rest, much as he has been since the summer, and it’s one of the unfortunate aspects of sport that a performance of such excellence still wasn’t enough to clinch the ultimate prize. On the day, Jorge Lorenzo had done exactly what he needed to do but over the season, so had Marc Marquez.
