Felix Rosenqvist has scored pole position in what must be the most important Formula 3 race of the season at the season ending Macau Grand Prix.

The GR Asia with Mucke driver beat stiff competition from Carlin‘s Antonio Felix Da Costa to get his first pole position in the crown jewel of F3 to better his best of fourth in quail last year. The hope will be that he can improve on his two second places in 2012.

Getting in a lap of 2:13.477 in the middle of the session, it was clear that Rosenqvist wasn’t going to be messed with even when Da Costa broke into 2:12s with a 2:12.862. That looked to be good enough but with ten minutes to go Rosenqvist hit back going a tenth faster over the 6.2KM circuit.

The pair were looking set to go faster still but Yuichi Nakayama crashed with 90 seconds left on the clock to bring out the red flag and thus end the session early.

In third place was ThreeBond with T-Sport‘s Alexander Sims who finished ahead of Harry Tincknell and Pipo Derani. After a crash in practice, Carlos Sainz recovered to a respectable sixth place in the session.

The second qualifying session, which could see the order change on its head, will take place Friday at 14:45 local time which is 7:45 in the UK. www.theCheckeredFlag.co.uk will bring all the results from the second qualifying and both races right here.
