Kallio Closes Jerez Moto2 Test On Top

2 Mins read

Mika Kallio produced the fastest Moto2 lap of Jerez for two years to upstage Esteve Rabat and Thomas Luthi on the final day of this week’s pre-season test. Rabat and Luthi had dominated the first two days but Kallio’s 1:42.169, the quickest Moto2 lap time since the 2012 pre-season test, saw him pip them by a tenth of a second.

The weather has been a source of frustration at times this week and it proved the same again on Thursday morning as fog in Andalucía delayed proceedings. Once visibility improved, Kallio went quickest while his Marc VDS teammate Rabat struggled with direction change, an issue which brought a halt to his race simulation. A lack of grip hampered Luthi on the Interwetten Suter as the Swiss rider fell from first to third.

Takaaki Nakagami completed his strong week in fourth while fifth placed Alex de Angelis was left to rue a crash on day two which restricted his running in the back end of the test. Sandro Cortese took sixth ahead of Sam Lowes with Lorenzo Baldassarri making as big an improvement as anyone to finish eighth fastest.

Just one test remains before the opening race of the season in Qatar. The intermediate class returns to Jerez for three more days of running starting on March 11th.
