Points Leader Watson Delighted With Brands Start

1 Mins read

Early Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup championship leader Andrew Watson feels his podium hat-trick on the opening weekend at Brands Hatch is the perfect start to what he hopes will be a championship-winning campaign.

Watson was the quickest driver on the grid throughout the weekend in Kent, topping the timesheets in pre-event testing and qualifying.

After converting his pole position into victory in race one, a small error in race two cost him a second win, with him instead nursing his damaged Douglas Motorsport G55 home in second.

Race three proved to be the most action-packed of the weekend, with Watson in the thick of the battles, eventually capping off his weekend with third place.

Speaking after the final race, Watson told TheCheckeredFlag.co.uk: “I’m dripping in champagne, which can never be a bad thing. A podium in that race to top off the weekend is great, and I’ve never been on the podium three times in one meeting before so it’s fantastic.

“Having the championship lead is brilliant, but it’s only one out of ten weekends so far, so we’re not reading too much into it.”

Watson’s attentions have now turned to the next Supercup meeting at Donington Park in three weeks time, the Leicestershire circuit having been the scene of his first Ginetta Junior Championship podium two years ago.

“We had a really good test at Donington a couple of months ago, so confidence is high and I know I can win more races there, and build a good foundation to hopefully go on and win the championship,” he added.
