While Alex Morgan may have been the star of the show in the opening rounds of the Renault UK Clio Cup at Brands Hatch, the early championship leader feels the first two races in Kent showed just how close the fight at the front of the field is going to be this year.
Double race-winner Morgan was joined on the main podium by four different drivers over the weekend, KX Akademy/SV Racing team-mate Josh Cook, WDE Motorsport’s Paul Rivett and Team Pyro pairing Rob Smith and Mike Bushell.
This came after the top ten in qualifying were split by less than half a second, with Morgan having secured both pole positions.
With the likes of Ash Hand, James Colburn and Lee Pattison also sure to be in contention for race wins, Morgan believes it’s going to be a long, tough battle to be crowned champion at the end of the year.
“Coming into the season I’d only been testing with my team-mates, so we thought we were there or thereabouts, but didn’t know how our rivals would shape up,” Morgan told TCF after the second race.
“Having three drivers from three different teams on the podium today, it just goes to show how close it is going to be. I think we’re going to see a lot of different line-ups on the podium this year, and it’s whoever can be as consistent as possible that will come out on top at the end of the season.”
