Joe Fulbrook took a hard-fought victory in race one of the weekend in the Volkswagen Racing Cup at Silverstone.
Fulbrook’s victory came at the foot of Aaron Mason’s demise, as the reigning champion picked up a puncture late in the race, dropping him through the field.
Starting from pole, Fulbrook got off the line badly, dropping behind the VW Golf GTI of Sam Morgan going into Copse for the first time. Morgan , running without the default rear wing on his car this weekend at a fast Silverstone circuit, soon dropped back behind Fulbrook however as the AWM Warranty Racing driver dived up the inside going into Village.
Following a safety car to remove the stricken Golf GTI’s of Stewart Lines and Matt Hamilton, the lead changed once again with Aaron Mason coming to the fore at the start of the fourth lap, taking the lead going into Copse.
Mason’s joy at the front was short lived though, with a front left puncture striking the Doncaster racer with just two laps to go, dropping the 2012 champion down to 11th come the chequered flag.
However Mason’s demise was his teammate Fulbrook’s fortune, as he crossed the line to take victory ahead of Lucas Orrock in 2nd, with the KPM Racing driver taking Sam Morgan late on for the third and final podium position.
Chris Panayiotou finished behind Morgan in 5th, with Josh Caygill crossing the line 6th and in doing so taking pole for the second race of the weekend.
