2. Alex Marquez (Moto3)
Marc Marquez may have taken most of the headlines on Sunday in Barcelona but three hours earlier, his younger brother produced a performance that the MotoGP champion would have been proud of. Alex Marquez has been tipped by his sibling to be just as good, if not better, than he is and with performances like this one, you can see what he’s talking about.
Moto3 is supposed to be the closest class on the Grand Prix scene with races often decided by mere thousandths of a second (just 0.011s covered the top three in Mugello) but Marquez made a mockery of that this weekend, starting in qualifying. After seeing his Estrella Galicia teammate Alex Rins hold the edge for much of the session, Marquez unleashed an astonishing burst of pace which put six tenths into his compatriot and secured a first career pole position.
With the long pit straight guaranteed to provide slipstreaming aplenty, it was tough to envisage anyone breaking away at the front of the field but Alex aced the start and within two laps, had a second on his nearest challenger. With the tow broken, Marquez made his escape and romped to an unchallenged victory by 3.2 seconds. In Moto3, you’re simply not supposed to be able to do that.
