Merhi Storms to Race 2 Pole in Germany

2 Mins read

Roberto Merhi took his second pole position of the season after dominating a wet qualifying session around the Nurburgring circuit in Germany. The Zeta Corse driver was on the pace throughout the session, and was able to respond to anything his rivals managed.

Starting on the front row alongside Merhi is Colombian sensation Oscar Tunjo, who surpassed everyone’s expectations by putting his Pons Racing second. The eighteen year old was able to better the times set by championship contenders Carlos Sainz Jr and Oliver Rowland, who will start third and fourth respectively for DAMS and Fortec Motorsports.

Row three will see the two Lotus drivers lining up fifth and sixth, with Matthieu Vaxiviere, returning to the series this weekend after recovering from a back problem that ruled him out of the past two events and the Le Mans 24 Hours, ahead of Marlon Stockinger.

Podium finisher from race one on Saturday Sergey Sirotkin will start seventh in the second of the Fortec Motorsports entries, just ahead of Zoel Amberg of AV Formula, while Pietro Fantin of International Draco Racing and Will Stevens of Strakka Racing start ninth and tenth.

The disappointing weekend for Pierre Gasly and the whole Arden Motorsport team continued, with the Frenchman struggling again and qualifying down on the back row of the grid in twenty-first alongside series debutant Cameron Twynham of Comtec Racing. Gasly’s team-mate William Buller also struggled and will start seventeenth.

Merhi won the previous time he took pole position at Moscow Raceway, and is proving to be a serious contender every time he drives onto a racetrack. A win today could see him climb into second position in the championship and become the closest challenger to his countryman Sainz’s lead.
