Danish driver Marco Sorensen will compete in this weekends GP2 Series rounds at Silverstone for the MP Motorsport team. The Formula Renault 3.5 Series regular replaces Cypriot driver Tio Ellinas in the Dutch squad.
Sorensen is part of the Lotus F1 Team’s junior programme, and with the backing of Saxo Bank, the Dane will make his first GP2 Series appearance this weekend. He joins regular driver Daniel de Jong in the team, and is the third driver to race the #21 car in 2014 after Ellinas and Briton Jon Lancaster.
“This is a really good opportunity for me, I’m actually looking forward to a new challenge,” said Sorensen. “It’s great that Gravity Sports Management, Lotus F1 Team and MP Motorsport gave me this opportunity to race in GP2 Series.
“My plan 100% is to get up to speed quickly and get the best results I can for MP Motorsport, but the practice is only 45 minutes and then we have qualifying on the same day. For sure it will be difficult, but there isn’t a lot of pressure so I’m going to enjoy it – that’s when I drive my best.”
MP Motorsport Team Principal Sander Dorsman is delighted that 23-year-old Sorensen is joining his team, and believes he has a very quick driver in the #21.
“We’re absolutely delighted to announce Marco is joining MP Motorsport, he’s a fantastic young driver and his position as official reserve driver for the Lotus F1 Team speaks for itself”, said Dorsman, “Although he is new to GP2, he brings good experience from Formula Renault 3.5 so we’re sure he will quickly adapt to the GP2 car and be a force to be reckoned with.”
Sorensen currently races for the Tech 1 Racing squad in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, and for the first time will have a team-mate in de Jong, having been the lone driver for Tech 1 so far in 2014. He’s best result so far this year is second in Monaco, but has three previous race victories in Formula Renault 3.5, at Spa-Francorchamps in 2012 and a double win at the Red Bull Ring last year.
