Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup front-runner Andrew Watson has become the latest young British driver to be awarded ‘Rising Star’ status by the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC).
The accolade sees Watson acknowledged as an exceptional young talent in British motorsport, with the 19 year old joining a select group of invited drivers that includes his Supercup title rivals Charlie Robertson and David Pittard.
Watson has impressed over the last few years in Ginetta racing, following up a top five finish in Ginetta Juniors in 2012 with an impressive maiden Supercup campaign last year. After taking three podiums in 2013, Watson has established himself as a title contender this season with two wins so far.
“It is a huge privilege to be invited to join the BRDC Rising Star Scheme,” said Watson. “The scheme commands a lot of respect and it is a huge compliment that the BRDC has taken interest in my career.
“I am looking forward to exploring the opportunities that this scheme newly awards me. I’m now in a club with only the best drivers in the world and we want to show everyone we belong there.”
“We’ve been very impressed with Andrew’s performances this season and are confident he has the potential to be a very successful racing driver in the future,” added BRDC Secretary Stuart Pringle.
“We believe that by making him a Rising Star we can help that process and we look forward to welcoming him as a full BRDC member in due course.”
