Yelloly Leads GP3 Practice as Stoneman Crashes

2 Mins read

Briton Nick Yelloly set the fastest time in a disrupted free practice ahead of this weekend’s GP3 Series races around the Silverstone circuit. The Status Grand Prix driver was 0.294s faster than fellow Briton Dino Zamparelli, but another home driver Dean Stoneman ended his session with his Marussia Manor Racing machine in the Stowe barriers, which resulted in a red flag period.

Yelloly’s best time came after the session resumed after Stoneman’s car was cleared from the crash scene. The ART Grand Prix duo of Zamparelli and Marvin Kirchhofer were second and third, and the only other two drivers to set lap times under the 1:48s barrier.

Another Briton, this time Emil Bernstorff, was the leading Carlin driver in fourth; the winner of the second race in Austria just beating Jann Mardenborough of Arden International by 0.062s.

Alex Fontana was sixth in the third and final ART Grand Prix entry, ahead of Patrick Kujala of Marussia Manor Racing, while Alfonso Celis Jr impressed to finish eighth for Status Grand Prix. Matheo Tuscher of Jenzer Motorsport and Roman de Beer of Trident Racing completed the top ten.

The top three in the championship all struggled during the session. Leader Alex Lynn of Carlin could only finish eleventh, second placed Jimmy Eriksson was down in eighteenth for Koiranen GP, with third placed Richie Stanaway thirteenth for Status Grand Prix.

Qualifying takes place first thing on Saturday morning ahead of the first race later that afternoon.
