Former Michelin Clio Cup Series racer James Weston is targeting a move into the Renault UK Clio Cup next season with SV Racing.
Weston competed with the front-running outfit during the 2013 Clio Series. Despite entering the series with no previous racing experience, the 26 year old impressed with six class wins in eight races and an overall top ten finish in every race.
Budget problems unfortunately left him unable to return to the Clio Series grid this season, with Weston instead spending the time focusing his attentions onto next season and making an entry into the BTCC-supporting Clio Cup.
“I have chosen the UK Clio Cup as it is the perfect feeder series to the BTCC, and it is the next step on the ladder after competing in the Michelin Clio Cup Series,” Weston told TCF.
“The pace is higher and an even bigger challenge for me to take by the horns. I learnt a lot in my first year of racing in 2013 and I expect the learning curve to be just as steep.
“Being with SV Racing is also a super opportunity to continue my development with Danny Buxton [SV Racing Director] and really improve myself as a driver.”
His chances of making the grid have been given a boost after he recently signed a sponsorship deal with UK performance lubricants brand Ultimo GT, and the Tunbridge Wells resident is now focusing on raising the remaining budget required for the drive.
“My partnership with Ultimo GT is a great opportunity to work together and to create a long term partnership that will hopefully see us progress together in the future,” he added.
“We still need to find more sponsors to join our adventure to be able to commit to the 2015 campaign, but we have taken a step in the right direction and hopefully we can find the remaining backing.”
