The first ever Formula E race gets underway in Beijing for an hours duel around the streets surrounding the Bird’s Nest Stadium following years of preparation.
Www.TheCheckeredFlag.co.uk will be providing live coverage of the first race, charting the thrills, spills and overtakes from the very first all electric single seater race.
Morning all! Welcome to the live coverage of the first ePrix. If you missed it, qualifying took place just over three hours ago and the report is here: http://www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk/2014/09/nicolas-prost-sets-history-taking-first-formula-e-pole/
Live timing can be found here: http://www.fiaformulae.com/en/live.aspx. Expect a lot of positions changing as drivers make contact with the walls, kerbs or each other.
Fan boost winners are out and they are Bruno Senna, Lucas Di Grassi and Katherine Legge. They have one boost per car so two boosts to use over the length of the race.
Formation lap is underway as Sarrazin didn’t seem to want to get away from the grid
Ho Pin Tung is starting from the pit lane because of a gearbox change after an accident during qualifying
Twenty years after they began, the grid is finally forming up after the formation lap and we are getting ready to start!
We are racing! Prost holds the lead and the two Abt cars follow in behind
Bruno Senna is out with left front wheel damage
Jarno Trulli getting pushed back off the grid
Tung hasn’t left pit exit yet with issues of his own
Safety car has been deployed to recover the broken car of Bruno Senna
Safety car laps are still taking place, organisers may need to consider speeding them up in the future. These are painfully slow
We have gone back to racing on lap five and Franck Montagny is looking to make something happen
Montagny and Bird both get past Alguersuari
Rear wing failure for Buemi in the e.DAMS car so looks like he might be retiring
Buemi’s car is having the spanners on to it to try and replace the rear wing and get back out
Prost still leads but the two Abt cars are looming like Lions stalking a gazelle
Amlin Aguri car has ground to a halt out on track at the first corner
Live timing available here: http://livetiming.alkamelsystems.com/fiaformulae/
Sarrazin going into the pit lane now and jumping into car 2
Buemi is under investigation for an earlier incident according to race control
Montagny goes into the pit lane very quickly, could see a penalty for that
Pit stops seem to be going well so far, there is a minimum pit stop time so cars not setting off straight away aren’t too unusual
Buemi has a drive through penalty for crossing the pit exit line
Prost seems to have very much mastered the pit stops, four second cushion to Nick Heidfeld in second place
Michela Cerruti gets a drive through penalty for too quick a pit stop time
Chandhok gets past Sam Bird for sixth place just before the track narrows
Battery percentages on the graphics aren’t on the money so don’t rely on them, Prost has been on 3% for a few laps now
Heidfeld closing up on Prost, Venturi car seems to be running a lot less downforce
Prost and Heidfeld is shaping up to be a three lap blast to the line, could Di Caprio see his team win the first Formula E race?
Penultimate lap now and the difference between them is 0.5 seconds
Final lap now, if Heidfeld is going to make a move he needs to do it now
REALLY REALLY BAD CRASH, Heidfeld and Prost touch, Heidfeld flips and hits the barrier at the last corner
Di Grassi takes the victory for Abt from Franck Montagny. Heidfeld is out the car and giving Prost a piece of his mind
1. Di Grassi
Prost completely at fault for that accident, swerved into the Venturi car
