Newly-crowned 2014 Ginetta Junior Champion Jack Mitchell is set to get his first taste of BTCC machinery later this month with a prize test in one of Motorbase Performance’s Ford Focus’.
Mitchell has been on Motorbase’s young driver programme this year, benefitting from support behind the scenes on and off the track from the front-running BTCC squad as well as Airwaves Racing branding on his Ginetta G40.
The 16 year old wrapped up the Ginetta title at his and the team’s home circuit of Brands Hatch this past weekend, having won seven races over the course of the season, and Motorbase team principal David Bartrum is rewarding his efforts with a BTCC run.
“It’s amazing really, it’s what I’ve dreamed of doing from a young age and I can’t wait!” said Mitchell. “The fastest thing I’ve ever been out in before is a Ginetta junior car so it’s going to be a big jump up going into the Focus touring car, but I’m looking forward it.”
“It was always in my mind to have him test the Focus,” added Bartrum. “To take a youngster from a Ginetta Junior and to put him straight in a touring car, you’ve got to know that their head’s right. He’s definitely a very mature lad for his age and I’m looking forward to him testing the Motorbase Ford and to see how he gets on.”
Mitchell’s prize BTCC test sees him following in the footsteps of Tom Ingram who got a run out in a Pirtek Racing Vauxhall Vectra when he won the Junior title in 2010, while 2012 top three Charlie Robertson, Niall Murray and Sennan Fielding all got behind the wheel of a Speedworks Toyota Avensis.
