7) Adam Morgan
Last season he made himself a star, so it was only right that Morgan took his first BTCC win in 2014.
It was a shame therefore that it was inherited after podium celebrations having initially missed out in a race two epic at the Brands Hatch GP finale, carving through to a popular lead before running wide at Sheene and settling for second on the road before Plato’s penalty was applied.
That aside, 2014 was predominantly all about his Ciceley Racing squad bringing back the Silver Arrows of Mercedes to the BTCC for the first time since the 1980s. The A-Class was anything but an embarrassment, 15 top-10 finishes earned by Morgan who became a consistent front-runner once again for his family-run squad.
The learning stages left qualifying Morgan’s initial downfall, something which he admitted himself after Rockingham to TCF was improving, while scrapes such as the opening lap kerfuffle involving Nick Foster at Croft ruined weekends that were set to be strong.
Morgan’s enjoyment was plain to see during the year as development became the key factor in 2014, paying off handsomely as the machine’s dry weather pace interloped the likes of BMW, MG and Honda during the latter half of the season.
The Mercedes man also pulled off what several will see as the overtake of the season also, completing a double pass at Snetterton on both Alain Menu and Aron Smith’s Volkswagen CCs into Montreal hairpin.
Speaking to TCF, Morgan said: “There’s no reason why we can’t be having wins and podiums for next season now. We’ll definitely be pushing on for next year.”
A potential second car and a year’s worth of experience with the Mercedes should indeed be positives for Morgan in 2015, where a genuine race-winning celebration may well be seen…
