Lowes Leads Rain Affected Moto2 Test at Jerez

2 Mins read

Sam Lowes will head to next weekend’s Moto2 season opener full of confidence after topping the timesheets in this week’s final pre-season test. The Speed Up rider has been competitive throughout the winter in dry conditions and proved this weekend that his 2015 Speed Up has pace in the wet too, leading the rest of the field by a full second.

With Moto3 benefitting from the few windows of dry weather this week, the Moto2 riders had to make do with wet running, Julian Simon setting the fastest time on day one, some 13 seconds shy of the benchmark from last month’s test. Lowes would keep Speed Up at the head of the leaderboard with a 1:44.129, making the most of a drying track on Wednesday morning, while further rain in the afternoon ensured that would be the quickest time of the week.

With the overall leaderboard shaped almost entirely on Wednesday morning’s dry session, Jonas Folger took second ahead of Thomas Luthi and Takaaki Nakagami with Randy Krummenacher and Azlan Shah the unfamiliar names in the top six. Reigning champion Esteve Rabat isn’t used to being as low as seventh but his position will have been the least of his worries after a high side at turn four this morning.

Dominique Aegerter was eighth quickest with Julian Simon tumbling to ninth in the dry while 2014 runner-up Mika Kallio rounded out the top ten.
