Leist Takes Early Lead to Secure Race 5 Victory

2 Mins read

After taking the lead into Redgate, Matheus Leist built up a large lead in order to win the second race of the weekend at the Donington National Circuit for the Double R Racing team.

The reverse grid pole had been taken by Jack Barlow who was on pole after finishing 8th in race 3. He was joined on the front row by Leist, with Ricky Collard and Sennan Fielding close behind. It was a good start for Leist who took the lead going down into Redgate, meanwhile, Barlow saw himself drop to 4th by the end of the first lap.

All the cars made it safely through the first lap as the field spread out. As the drivers got onto their second lap, Leist lead from Fielding, Collard, Barlow and Gustavo Myasava who had made a good start.

Meanwhile Enaam Ahmed who had started 10th, struggled to keep pace and lost a position to James Pull who wanted to make progress after a disappointing start. Leist started to extend his lead to 1.8 seconds after 5 minutes of racing. While there was a close battle for 7th as Dan Baybutt, Pull and Lando Norris were almost side by side, with Baybutt remaining in front. However; the fight had seen them drop off by 5.5 seconds to 6th.

With 12 minutes to go, Collard took 2nd from Fielding while setting the fastest lap. There was one spinner in the form of Sandy Mitchell who went off in turn 1, this caused prolonged yellow flags, with Leist setting his own fastest lap during this point. Meanwhile, Ahmed continued to fall to 15th before damaging his wing. He would have to pit, destroying his race.

The race had started to settle, but with 5 minutes to go, Norris came into his own. He overtook Pull and started catching the drivers in front. Myasava’s tyres had started to wear down and lost his 6th position to Baybutt and then 7th to Norris. Lando continued his run by taking Baybutt for 6th at Coppice with 1 minute to go.

This would be a disastrous last lap for Baybutt who would fall to 10th. Meanwhile Rafael Martins damaged his front wing and ran off track.

Liest won the race after backing off on the last lap. Second was Collard, followed by Fielding and Barlow, who claimed the fastest lap, while 5th placed Ticktum retains his championship lead.
