Hughes leaves it late to take maiden Eurocup victory

1 Mins read

Jake Hughes passed Ukyo Sasahara on the final lap to claim his maiden Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Series victory in race two at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday.

The Koiranen GP driver reeled in the ART Junior Team driver and passed the Japanese racer into Les Combes with less than a lap of the race remaining and took the chequered flag to win by 0.535s.

Hughes had made a good start and was alongside Sasahara but was baulked by the Japanese racer, with the British driver dropping to third behind the Fortec Motorsports machine of Ben Barnicoat as a result, but he was soon back into second and went about closing the gap back down to Sasahara.

Russian driver Matevos Isaakyan took the final podium position for JD Motorsport, passing Barnicoat at the same time Hughes did, with the Racing Steps Foundation-backed Briton ultimately finishing fourth.

Ignazio D’Agosto was fifth for Manor MP Motorsport ahead of Anthoine Hubert of Tech 1 Racing, meaning the top six positions at the end of the race were filled by six different teams.

Seventh went to Koiranen GP driver Jack Aitken, who battled hard for the position with Josef Kaufmann Racing driver Kevin Jörg, while Fortec Motorsports driver Callan O’Keeffe and JD Motorsport’s Thiago Vivacqua completed the top ten and the points scorers.

Championship leader Louis Deletraz failed to score for the first time this season when he was hit from behind by Manor MP Motorsport driver Dennis Olsen heading into La Source on lap three.
