JOTA Sport Wins LMP2 at Spa

JOTA Sport won the exciting LMP2 class yesterday at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, putting them in the best possible position ahead of Le Mans.

The team of Simon Dolan, Mitch Evans and Harry Tincknell won the 6 hour race in their Gibson 015S Nissan, from Tincknell’s start on the 3rd row on the LMP2 grid. By the end of the second lap, Tincknell had made his way from 5th up to 1st in class, but had to serve a drive-through penalty after a jump start. He resumed the race 22 seconds down and in 7th place. By the time the handed the car over to Evans, 90 minutes into the race, the #38 was back in 2nd place.

Coming up to 2 hours into the race, Evans moved up to 1st place in LMP2, and pitted for Dolan to takeover with an advantage of 88 seconds. With two hours remaining, Dolan refuelled, still 38 seconds ahead of the 2nd place car.

For the next stint, Tincknell re-took control of the car with 90 minutes left. A 28 second lead soon turned to 93 seconds when the 2nd place car had a mechanical issue. With 40 minutes left, he handed the car over to Mitch Evans who had the easy challenge of finishing the race from such a massive lead.

“We came to the WEC race and smashed it!” said an excited Simon Dolan. “We are really pleased with the victory and very happy with the Gibson-Nissan. Coming in to the WEC as ELMS regulars we can possibly view ourselves as the poor relations so to score such a dominant victory and set the race’s fastest lap blows that preconception away! We walked all over everybody and made a pretty positive statement and I personally couldn’t be happier. Harry and Mitch both did sterling jobs. We knew that the tyres were going to be the deciding factor all the way along so we were taking it really easy and Dunlop did us proud. I also loved qualifying – it was great fun. I was very pleased with my pace especially considering it was probably only the second time I’ve ever driven in qually.”

The next race on the calendar is the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race which JOTA scored a class win last year. They will try and repeat their success on June 13/14.
