AmD Tuning driver Mike Bushell has been transferred to Southampton General Hospital following the heavy accident in BTCC qualifying at Thruxton, which left him with a severe leg injury.
Bushell’s Ford Focus ST made contact with the Speedworks Motorsport Toyota Avensis of fellow former Renault UK Clio Cup racer Simon Belcher while exiting the pitlane during the 30-minute session, Belcher on a flying lap at the time.
Both cars speared off into the barriers exiting Allard, emerging from their cars before they were then taken to the Hampshire circuit’s medical centre.
After initial tests, Bushell was transferred to Southampton General Hospital, where he is reportedly “conscious and responsive”. Despite concerns of a suspected broken femur, further tests revealed that he avoided broken bones but sustained severe ligament damage.
“The most important thing is that Mike has escaped more serious injury as a result of the accident,” AmDTuning.com team boss Shaun Hollamby said.
“While it’s a disappointing way for our weekend to finish, I’d like to put on record my thanks to the marshals and medical teams who were on hand for their fantastic response to the incident. As is always the case, they did a brilliant job in dealing with the situation.”
We at The Checkered Flag sincerely wish Bushell a speedy recovery.
