Vaxiviere beats Visser to race 1 pole

1 Mins read

Matthieu Vaxiviere took his second pole position of the 2015 Formula Renault 3.5 Series season for race one at Spa-Francorchamps in a session affected by two red flag periods.

The Frenchman, driving for the Charouz-run Lotus team, set a best time of 1m58.768s late in the session to consolidate his top spot having also been fastest during the first runs.

Beitske Visser had by far her best qualifying session so far in her career, with the Dutch female racer setting the second fastest time for the Adrian Vallés-led AVF team, just 0.125s from the pole time of Vaxiviere.

Canadian driver Nicholas Latifi was third for Arden Motorsport ahead of Fortec Motorsports duo Jazeman Jaafar and Oliver Rowland, who were both affected by a late yellow flag during their final runs that could have seen them get to the front of the field.

Nyck de Vries and Dean Stoneman will start sixth and eighth for DAMS, with the Strakka Racing machine of Tio Ellinas in between the two team-mates. Roberto Merhi, back on the grid this weekend after missing the previous round at Monaco due to his Formula 1 commitments with the Manor F1 Team, was ninth for Pons Racing, while Meindert van Buuren completed the top ten for Lotus.

The first of the two red flag periods were caused by Arden Motorsport driver Egor Orudzhev crashing, before Tom Dillmann of Jagonya Ayam with Carlin also stopped on track after the session resumed, resulting in a second stoppage. Dillmann’s team-mate Sean Gelael caused the yellow flag in the final moments of the session that cost some drivers that vital final lap.
