Richard “Spike” Goddard caught the eye of many a racing fan on Sunday morning after taking a fantastic twelfth position finish for MRS-GT Racing following round four of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup at Silverstone.
Practice on Friday proved to be a positive portent of things to come, with the Australian claiming thirteenth position in an intense and hot session. Yet Saturday morning’s qualifying session would not be quite so easy to call and Goddard would find himself at the wrong end of the top twenty, a net nineteenth after penalties were applied for the indiscretions of other competitors.
Commenting on the result, Goddard dejectedly adds “It was definitely not the qualifying performance we had wanted”
The twelfth position he was clinging on to as the chequered flag came out on Sunday morning was certainly what driver and team wanted. It was a hectic and spectacular race and you can read all about it here: http://www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk/2015/07/eng-sublime-as-carrera-cup-stars-self-destruct/
For Goddard, calm and mature driving was critical. It was these assets that allowed him to stealthily work his way up through the packed order, a mighty performance. The delight shows: “I was happy with my performance during Sunday’s race. It was a very eventful race and I enjoyed it very much,” Goddard says and his next Supercup outing comes at the Hungaroring in three week’s time.
