WorldRX heads to Historic Holjes

2 Mins read

The 2015 FIA World Rallycross Championship moves to the historic Holjes circuit in Sweden for round six of this years series with the venue celebrating its 40th anniversary of Rallycross championship action.

The 2014 event saw double DTM champion and Team owner Mattias Ekstrom take his EKS Audi S1 to its first ever victory at the teams third appearance in the championship and is hoping to repeat that form again this weekend.

“Last year was very special – to win with your own team, building the car together with the guys and doing it in only our third race. That victory was one of the best moments in my entire life and it always will be. I feel that Holjes is one of the tracks where my driving style and our car fits the best. We will keep our heads held high and promise a big show for our local fans this weekend.” said Ekstrom

A total of 39 Supercars will contest the two days of Heats, Semi-Finals and Finals along with support action from all of the supporting catergories from the RX Lites Cup, Super 1600, and Touring Cars. A total of 89 cars across the different catergories will see action on track and amongst the bumper Supercar entry are a number of big name Rallycross drivers joining the 18 regular WorldRX drivers and the 8 teams.

FIA European Rallycross regular drivers join the field with Ramoma Karlsson in her Volkswagen Scirocco, Peter Hedstrom in his Skoda Fabia and Ole-Christian Veiby in his Volkswagen Polo, whilst Uncle and nephew duo Stig-Olov Walfridson and Lukas Walfridson will pilot a pair of Renault Clio Supercars for Helmia Motorsport. Finnish Rallycross driver Niclas Gronholm joins in with his GronholmRX run Ford Fiesta.

Holjes will also see the debut of the Eklund Motorsport Volkswagen Beetle in the hands of Daniel Holten whilst Per Eklund will pilot one of his iconic Saab 93 Supercars. The Beetle is the second car to run to the new for 2015 custom engines rules.

Team manager Per Eklund explains: “It’s great to be working with a driver like Daniel who has already proven his potential. We are confident that the Beetle is a brilliant base for a Supercar, the dimensions of it are really, really good. We are more motivated than ever and will push hard to continue the development, together with Daniel.”

Drivers Championship leader Petter Solberg holds a 35 point lead going into Holjes and is looking to increase that lead, knowing that so far this year, both Johan Kristoffersson and Mattias Ekstrom have been his closest competition. Meanwhile in the Teams Trophy, Ford Olsbergs MSE holds a slim lead over SDRX with Team Peugeot-Hansen in third place.
