The British GT championship, this year won by Beechdean AMR in both GT3 and GT4, will have a different tyre supplier next season after the series penned a five year deal with Pirelli.
The deal, agreed by series organiser SRO, will see the 10 year deal with current supplier Avon Tyres come to an end. The company’s title sponsorship – which it also began in 2006 – will also be coming to an end this year.
SRO signed up Pirelli for British GT to keep it in line with other series SRO run using Pirelli tyres – the Blancpain Sprint Series and the Blancpain Endurance Series.
Manager of the British GT Championship, Benjamin Franassovici, thanked Avon for their partnership: “We are very excited to welcome Pirelli in 2016 as British GT’s official tyre partner for the next five years. The new partnership with British GT is part of a global plan for SRO and our platforms. Bringing our cars in line with the Blancpain GT Series is a perfect evolution. Using the same rubber also further enhances our recognised BoP in GT3 and GT4.
“The 2016 British GT calendar will be released soon, while I can also confirm that we’ve already received team commitments in both classes.
“Finally, I would like to thank Avon Tyres for their dedication and professional cooperation over the last ten years in British GT.”
This new deal with Pirelli caps off a good year for Britain’s premier GT series which saw yet another year of capacity grids with significant growth in GT4. Pirelli aren’t the first company to link in with the series either this year with PETRONAS coming on board before the 2015 season began as the series’ official lubricants partner.
