Matthiesen Delighted With “Perfect” Maiden Win

1 Mins read

Patrik Matthiesen has expressed his delight after taking his maiden victory in the Ginetta Junior Championship at Silverstone this past weekend.

Matthiesen started the second race of the weekend from fifth on the grid and made some strong early progress, taking fourth from Dave Wooder at Brooklands on lap one before passing Dan Zelos at Becketts for third a lap later.

At the start of lap three, slight contact between championship top two Jamie Caroline and Senna Proctor at Copse lost them both momentum, with Matthiesen seizing the opportunity to storm through into the lead.

Soon after the safety car came out to retrieve a stricken G40, but Matthiesen handled the restart perfectly and would benefit from battling behind to edge away for a three second victory, his fourth outright podium finish of the campaign.

“It’s perfect. It’s what I’ve wanted to do the whole season so it feels fantastic,” Matthiesen told TCF.

“I was quite nervous at times as I looked in my mirrors and I could see Jamie [Caroline] behind me and I know how fast he is. He didn’t catch me though and I was able to pull a gap which was brilliant. I’m so happy.”

The race win, plus a fifth place finish in the opening race, has helped the Dane extend his advantage at the top of the Rookie Cup standings to 31 points ahead of the Brands Hatch season finale next weekend.

“We really want to win the Rookie Cup and this has been a big help towards that,” he added. “We go to Brands Hatch hoping to get some good points there and win the title.”
