George Russell has lost his two front row starts and his second row start for the three races at the Nurburgring after his Carlin team was forced to change the Volkswagen engine on his car.
The British driver will therefore lose ten places on the grid for each of the three FIA European Formula 3 Championship races this weekend in Germany as a result of the engine change.
Russell had initially qualified second on the grid for both races one and two, and third for race three, but will drop down to twelfth on the grid for the first two races and thirteenth for the finale as a result.
Carlin had found a problem with his engine in between free practice and qualifying, and made the change ahead of the first qualifying session, but the penalties hamper the 2014 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner’s chances of claiming his second victory of the season, having won at Silverstone in April.
