A good weekend for Giuliano Alesi saw the French driver bring home his third win of the season and make his first return to the podium since the Pau Grand Prix back in May. Unfortunately, his performance wasn’t good enough to keep him in the championship fight.
Alesi, son of former Formula 1 driver Jean Alesi is coming to the end of his first year in car racing as he looks to step up to other series, having had a successful year in French F4.
After a strong qualifying Alesi lined up second for the first race. He made a good start deposing of championship leader Valentin Moineault quickly, before building up a lead, allowing him to add another trophy to his growing collection.
“The general outcome of this meeting of Navarra is positive overall as I’m leaving with a win. Nevertheless, I have to analyse the third race in detail where I was not able to do better than 5th with performance that could have put me on the podium.”
The third race didn’t go as Alesi planned, with the #27 struggling for pace throughout the race. Having started third he defended his position for the majority of the race before dropping back and once again defended his position to finish fifth.
He went on to say: “In three weeks we have the last meeting at Paul Ricard and I will use this time to work and become better prepared.”
“My motivation is intact and only victory will satisfy me. I know I can not win the championship but the podium remains within my reach and that will be my goal for the race at Le Castellet.”
While Alesi cannot win the main or the rookie championship, a strong result will allow him to clinch third overall. As he cannot finish any lower than fourth overall, the final round will see him in a straight shoot out with Gabriel Aubry.
