Russian star Sirotkin switches to ART GP

SMP Racing-backed Sergey Sirotkin will race for 2015 Team champions ART Grand Prix in his second GP2 Series season in 2016.

The twenty-year-old Russian driver was a race winner at Silverstone with Italian outfit Rapax during the 2015 season on his way to an impressive third place in the championship, replaces outgoing 2015 drivers’ champion Stoffel Vandoorne at ART GP with one eye on the championship.

“They are a winning team wherever they have competed so far, like in the GP2 history, with a unbelievable 2015 season,” said Sirotkin.

“This is a great opportunity for me, because ART Grand Prix has shown many times that it is the best place for a young driver to be and I intend to make the most of this opportunity, while doing the best possible job for the team.

“I would like to thank ART Grand Prix, SMP Racing and my partners for this opportunity and I’m sure it will be an amazing season for both me and the team.”

ART are yet to announce Sirotkin’s team-mate, but are expected to retain Japanese racer and Honda protégé Nobuharu Matsushita for a second season, who took victory in last season’s sprint race at the Hungaroring.
