Andersson Takes TouringCar Victory at Mettet

1 Mins read

Magda Andersson guided her Sweden Junior Team Ford Fiesta to the checkered flag to take her first victory in the TouringCar class at the 2016 Euro RX of Belgium, the first round of the 2016 FIA European Rallycross Championship.

In what was a closely contested event over the two days, Andersson managed to qualify for the Final after going fastest in Q4 and then following home David Nordgard in his Ford Fiesta during Semi-Final One to secure a spot on the middle row. In the Final itself, Andersson managed to avoid the contact in turn one to pass Ben-Philip Gundersen in his Mk6 Fiesta and stay in second behind Nordgard.

However Nordgard clipped the kerb in the chicane after turn one and broke his front suspension, handing the lead to Andersson who kept her Fiesta in the lead for the rest of the event. The car was hastily repaired in between Q3 and Q4 and showed no signs of problems as the young driver kept ahead of Fredrik Magnussen who himself started from the back row and avoided those who suffered retirements. As well as Nordgard, Per-Magne Royras suffered a puncture in his Mazda which eventually came to a halt whilst Magnussen chased Andersson to the flag. Gundersen completed the podium as 2014 Champion Daniel Lundh brought his Volvo home in 4th place whilst Royras was classified in fifth.

In the Driver Championship, Magnussen leads on 24 points whilst Nordgard, Andersson and Gundersen are all tied for second place on 23 points.
