Ben Barnicoat was penalised after the final race of the Red Bull Ring weekend of the FIA European Formula 3 Championship after being found guilty of passing under the safety car.

The Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver had passed Red Bull-backed Motopark driver Sergio Sette Câmara into turn one after believing that he was entitled to reclaim his position after making a mistake that had allowed the Brazilian driver past when the safety car had been deployed.

But the stewards deemed that the Hitech GP driver should not have assumed the position back, and shuffled Barnicoat back behind Sette Câmara in the final result, meaning he dropped from fourth to fifth.

“I ran wide and that’s how he overtook me,” said Barnicoat after the race. “As I was rejoining he overtook me, and I thought it was under the safety car.

“After reviewing it, I was off track and he had the right to overtake me, so I accept the decision.”
