Tony Kanaan was fastest in the final 30-minute practice session at Iowa Speedway on Saturday evening as drivers took the time to set their cars up for race conditions.

Kanaan had set the pace in morning practice but had only qualified sixth for the Iowa Corn 300, with the Chip Ganassi Racing driver setting a best time of 17.9695 seconds, the only driver to dip beneath 18 seconds.

Josef Newgarden was second quickest for Ed Carpenter Racing, which bodes well for the American who lines up on the front row of the grid, while pole sitter Simon Pagenaud was third for Team Penske.

Helio Castroneves ended the session fourth, also for Penske, while James Hinchcliffe was fifth for Schmidt Peterson Motorsport despite suffering a moment when he almost hit the wall after a close encounter with team-mate Mikhail Aleshin that the Russian apologised for, with the second Schmidt driver ending sixth fastest.

Sebastien Bourdais was seventh for KVSH Racing ahead of Penske’s Will Power, while Graham Rahal made it into the top ten for the first time this weekend in ninth for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Charlie Kimball.
