Australian racer James Allen had by far his best weekend of his Formula Renault 2.0 Series career as he claimed his maiden NEC podium finish and a fourth place at Spa-Francorchamps.

The JD Motorsport had two great qualifying sessions to claim fourth on the grid for race one, and then third for race two, and drove superbly throughout both races, even feeling he could have snatched second from Dorian Boccolacci had the opening race been a little longer.

Allen dropped down to sixth during Saturday’s final race after a mistake at Les Combes before finding his way passed both Boccolacci and Alex Gill for a fourth place finish, finishing on the tail of third placed Sacha Fenestraz.

“It has been a great day here at Spa!!” exclaimed Allen on his Facebook page after Friday’s opening race. “Quali one saw us put the car on 4th spot for the start of race one and then quali two we managed a 3rd, both qualifications were in the rain and a few red flags caused some headaches and potentially cost us a second place.

“Race one was wet and we quickly went from 4th to third. Towards the end of the race we were managing to eat some time out of second place but ran out of laps to get the next step.

“It was nice to share the champagne with my team as they have been waiting for a while and there were smiles all round.”
