Luca Ghiotto: “A podium is better than nothing”

Luca Ghiotto believed that third was probably the best he could have hoped for after struggling with his tyres during Sunday’s Sprint race at Spa-Francorchamps.

The Trident racer started second having finished seventh during Saturday’s Feature race in the Ardennes forest, but dropped to third at the start behind eventual winner Antonio Giovinazzi, but felt his morning’s work was compromised by his struggles with keeping life in his tyres.

“My start was not really good so I dropped to P3 and then I just stayed there,” said Ghiotto on gp2series.com. “I think that even if I had made a better start, we would still have probably ended P3 because in the second part of the race I struggled a lot with the tyres.

“So maybe, had my start been better, I think that after Turn 1 I would have been overtaken by the rest of the pack. We know where we have to improve because in the end I don’t think we did something wrong.

“But we destroy the tyres more than the others so it’s definitely something we need to work on. Of course, I’m still happy with this podium but I’m closer to a win this season so it’s a bit frustrating. But a podium is better than nothing.”
