Pierre Gasly secured his second pole position in as many years at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, and as such extended his championship advantage by a further four points.

It is the third time this season that the Prema Racing driver has secured pole position, recovering this time from a free practice stoppage that was more of a hindrance than anything else, and after slightly adjusting the set-up of his car in between qualifying runs, was able to deny team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi by just 0.054 seconds.

The Red Bull-backed Frenchman is now focused on Saturday’s Feature race in Italy as he aims to secure his fourth victory in five Feature races.

“It was a very good day, we ended P1 in free practice and P1 in qualifying,” said Gasly. “We couldn’t have hoped for better results.

“I’m really happy about how it went, congrats to the whole team for the mega job. After going on top in practice we had to stop on track for a small issue but it was nothing really important. We just lost some time and that was a bit of a shame, but except for that the car was great.

“In the first qualifying run I was second and then we managed to tune a little bit the car for the second run and got the pole which is nice. This is my second pole at Monza in two years, and I really enjoy the feeling, but now we have to focus on the race.”
