Surprise pole for Isaakyan on Red Bull Ring Sunday

Matevos Isaakyan secured a surprise maiden pole position for race two at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday morning, leading an all-rookie front row ahead of Louis Deletraz.

Isaakyan stormed to pole position with a best lap of 1:15.674 for his SMP Racing team, 0.090 seconds clear of Deletraz, and will be looking to convert that into his best result of the season having only two points all season long so far.

Deletraz on the other hand is involved in the championship battle, and will start just ahead of Matthieu Vaxiviere, who denied him victory in race one on Saturday. Vaxiviere’s third place however meant SMP Racing has both drivers inside the top three on the grid.

Championship leader Tom Dillmann, who finished third on Saturday, had set a time that would have seen him start fourth on the grid for the AVF by Adrian Vallés team, but had that time deleted for exceeding track limits, meaning the Frenchman will instead start seventh.

Inheriting that fourth place on the grid therefore was Israeli driver Roy Nissany, who lost some ground in the championship battle by only taking sixth on Saturday for Lotus and will be looking to main gains on Sunday.

Aurélien Panis will start fifth for Arden Motorsport ahead of Alfonso Celis Jr of AVF and Dillmann, while Egor Orudzhev will want to put the disappointment of his race one retirement behind him, and will start eighth.

Pietro Fittipaldi will be ninth on the grid for Fortec Motorsports, while Rene Binder will again be disappointed to end only tenth in the second Lotus.
