Fernando Alonso believes the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez poses a very different set of challenges compared to other Formula 1 circuits.

The McLaren Honda Formula 1 Team driver had a positive United States Grand Prix after he finished the Grand Prix in fifth, ahead of the Scuderia Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz Jr. This finish reflected a very positive race on Sunday for Alonso after he showcased some good overtaking moves.

Last year, Alonso had a very disappointing Grand Prix as he only achieved one lap after suffering a MGU-H rotational sensor failure. The Woking based team spotted the issue the night before with it being confirmed in the morning. With not having enough time to replace it they were left with two options, to race or not to race.

Out of respect for the fans, they decided to race but after only one lap Alonso had to retire the car. Despite the dark memories of Mexico, Alonso is looking forward to seeing where his package compares to last year.

“Last year we went to the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez with a lot of unknowns and relatively little information about how the cars would perform on the reconfigured circuit,” said Alonso.

“It poses a very different set of challenges to many other circuits because of the compromise you need between good downforce on the fast straights and also strong balance in the twisty stadium section.

“Then there’s the altitude, which affects performance in itself. It will be difficult to bring all of the elements together to get the best out of a lap, but I’m looking forward to seeing where our package compares to last year.”

Last year, McLaren received some positive support from the crowd and the Spaniard believes the buzz from the fans makes a difference to all the drivers on the grid.

“The whole team is looking forward to going back there for the second time at this famous circuit,” added Alonso.

“The buzz from the fans really makes a difference to the drivers, and, although we didn’t have a smooth weekend there last year, I still remember it as one of the highlight events because the whole experience was really enjoyable.”
