Nico Hülkenberg was delighted with his qualifying effort on Saturday as the Sahara Force India F1 Team driver secured an excellent fifth place on the grid for the Mexican Grand Prix.
The German believed he could not have got anything more from his lap that enabled him to out-qualify both of the Scuderia Ferrari drivers at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, with Hülkenberg getting within 0.626 seconds of the pole time of Lewis Hamilton.
Despite being eliminated in a turn one incident with Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas last weekend at the Circuit of the Americas, Hülkenberg is not going to let that affect him, and is hoping to have a strong race that would complete a strong weekend.
“It’s been a very good qualifying session for me and I am very happy with the result,” said Hülkenberg. “Our car works pretty well on every circuit nowadays, but I felt it just got better and better through qualifying as the track improved.
“My first lap in Q3 was mega, possibly my best qualifying lap of the season, and I don’t think there was anything more I could extract from it.
“We need to keep ourselves out of trouble at the start but I won’t let what happened last week influence me: every time you get to turn one, there is a unique dynamic and you just have to play it by ear. We have a good idea of where we are for the race and we’ll get our head down and build on today’s result.”
