A wet track and even hail greeted the eighteen EuroFormula Open Winter Series competitors on Saturday, and it was German Jannes Fittje who made the most of the conditions to grab pole position.
The Fortec Motorsports driver managed a lap of 2:16.319 to set the pace, with Fittje 0.462 seconds clear of SMP Racing-backed Russian Nikita Troitskiy of Drivex School, who will join him on the front row of the grid.
Thiago Vivacqua was third quickest in the leading of the Campos Racing entries, while Russian Yan Shlom will start fourth for Fortec Motorsports, although his time was just over one-second shy of that set by team-mate Fittje.
Harrison Scott, who was fastest during Friday’s practice sessions and in Saturday mornings final session, could only manage fifth on the grid for RP Motorsport, 1.033 seconds down on the polesitter, but 0.724 seconds clear of sixth placed Simo Laaksonen of Campos Racing.
Carlin Motorsport duo Devlin De Francesco and Ameya Vaidyanathan were seventh and eighth fastest respectively, while Ukrainian racer Alexey Chuklin was ninth for Fortec Motorsports ahead of the leading Teo Martin Motorsport entrant Pedro Cardoso.
Both scheduled races take place on Saturday afternoon.
